Herpes Gladiatorum - Skin Cold Sores

Herpes Gladiatorum, Cold Sores

The same herpes simplex virus that causes cold sores, either herpes simplex type 1 or 2, also is responsible for the recent Minnesota herpes gladiatorum outbreak. At least 40 cases have been reported, involving 15 schools.

Fortunately, the Minnesota wrestling season is about over. It is unusual that one state such as Minnesota would be host to such an outbreak and not so much in the surrounding states.

Coaches in Wisconsin, Iowa, North and South Dakota are on high alert in watching for any suspicious rashes - and pulling those wrestlers from the roster.

Herpes gladiatorum is not a new thing for sure. A more commonly used name is mat herpes, and actually can date back to the gladiators of Roman days.

Quite likely what occurred in Minnesota was contamination of the mats during multi-school invitational wrestling meets. This would probably explain all these outbreaks at nearly the same time frame.

Herpes gladiatorum is a serious matter and should be guarded against. As with cold sores, fever blisters, and oral herpes, the infection of the herpes simplex virus is permanent in the body nerve cells.

Preventing herpes outbreaks is extremely important. Each cold sore or herpes gladiatorum outbreak is a risk factor for eye damage, infecting others or re-infecting yourself in a different area of the body.

In fact, frequent herpes outbreaks are thought to increase the risk of alzheimer's disease or possibly herpes of the brain.

It is becoming more apparent all the time that dramatically reducing, or eliminating, any cold sore or other herpes sores is important for better health.
