New Cold sore virus May Destroy Cancer Cells

A modified version of the herpes simplex virus responsible for cold sore outbreaks is showing early potential for success in targeting liver and colorectal cancer cells, scientists' report.

These findings were released to the group on Saturday, July 7 at the annual European Society for Medical Oncology meeting in Lugano, Switzerland.

The modified herpes virus was designed to target specific cancer cells for its replication event – killing them in the process. The research so far show the genetically modified virus is safe and does not attack healthy cells nearby.

”... our hope is that it will help fight cancers without causing side effects in the rest of the body," Dr Axel Mescheder, vice president of clinical research and development for MediGene, said in a short statement. MediGene is a German biotech company based in Munich.

Mescheder reported safety and efficacy results and described the case of a patient whose liver tumors appeared to be reduced six months after treatment with the virus.

Eight prestigious cancer centers in the United States are participating in ongoing studies.39% of victims of colorectal cancer die, because the cancer spreads to other parts of their body, particularly the liver. The results reported by Mescheder follow testing in the lab and in animals, where the virus was shown to be effective at killing colorectal cancer and liver cancer cells.
